Maryland-based Emergent BioSolutions Inc. is conducting phase clinical 3 trials of its COVID-19, blood plasma-derived therapy treatment for its outpatient, according to the company news release.

The trials, detailed as Human Immune Globulin Product Candidate Evaluated in NIH-Sponsored Phase 3 Clinical Trial (INSIGHT-012) of Hyperimmune Intravenous Immunoglobulin for Outpatient Treatment of COVID-19, appeared biopharmaceutical company’s site.

The randomized clinical trial will assign participants to receive infusions of either a placebo or the plasma treatment.

Researchers will evaluate the effectiveness of hyperimmune globulin products taken from blood plasma donations of people who have recovered from the coronavirus and developed the disease-fighting antibodies.

Like monoclonal antibody therapy, blood plasma-derived treatment is meant as an outpatient treatment for people who are at risk of developing severe illness from COVID-19, including immunocompromised adults and anyone 55 or over, but who haven’t yet needed to be hospitalized.
