Parents of Dutch schoolchildren at a primary school in the Netherlands have made a short video of their kids asking for applicants to apply for teaching vacancies in schools and be employed to teach them so as to help make their dreams come true. This was a way of responding to a national teacher shortage.

In the video, the schoolchildren talk about their ambitions to become a caretaker, pilot, plumber, acrobat or director when they get older in the future. The parents wrote on the Website of Wereldboom School, Amsterdam that it would be impossible for the children to achieve their career ambitions without a good teacher. The last child to speak said that he wanted to become a teacher because they don’t have teachers.

Nienke Abid, who has three children in Wereldboom School, told the Dutch newspaper Het Parol that she and other parents came together to support the video call and hoped that that would give the people the final push and it was very unfortunate they suffer teachers shortages despite having a lovely school with good philosophy about education

In the Netherlands, the teaching unions said that teacher shortage is chronic in 40% of primary and secondary schools for which they blame poor salaries.

The problem is most critical in the country’s major cities where emergency measures taken by headteachers include effecting a 4-day week or having unqualified people teach lessons.

Last month, 16 primary schools in the Nieuw-West area of Amsterdam did not open for one week as headteachers required reorganization of the schools in the face of teachers shortages.

Secondary schools have complained that the predicament has resulted in children being unprepared for secondary education when they gain admission from primary school.

Globally, many governments are struggling to recruit teachers. 33 countries will not have enough staff to provide quality education to all their school-age children by 2030.
