Nigeria’s best university ranks 800th in the World, according to Dr. Wale Babalakin, the Pro Chancellor and Chairman of Council of the University of Lagos. He therefore called for the restructuring of the education system of our university and secondary schools. This is to be able to produce employable graduates after education and to regain the country’s respect in the world community. This restructuring, he said, is of great importance considering the position of Nigeria’s best university as the 800th in the ranking of the universities in the world.

Delivering his speech at the Kwara State University Malate, the Chairman of Agreement Renegotiation Committee of Nigerian Universities emphasised on the need for the nation to start its education system all over again.

Babalakin therefore called on both State and Federal Government of Nigeria to channel more funds into secondary and university education system, stressing that quality outcome from secondary schools will lead to good university graduates.

The university don, who is also the chairman, Bi-Courtney Group of Companies, further advised the nation to promote free education if they can afford it, saying that quality should not be given up for quantity. He cited example of global organizations, like Cadbury, employing expatriates to manage their company rather than Nigerian graduates unlike what was obtainable in the past due to low quality graduates emerging from our universities.

Babalakin urged Kwara State Government to use KWASU as an example in starting up the restructuring scheme of education system in Nigeria by providing adequate funds for the university. He said that a situation where grants were not paid to the university for the past five years did not go well with the quality of the education system. He lamented that the present situations of overpopulation in Nigerian secondary schools without adequate facilities to ensure proper learning are quite alarming.
