More than 1000 schoolchildren abducted in Nigeria by bandits in 8 months – UNICEF
More than 1,000 schoolchildren were abducted by bandits between December 2020 and August 2021, the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) has said.
The United Nations Agency for Children was reacting to Friday’s release of 91 students of Salihu Tanko Islamiya School, Tegina, in Niger State, who were abducted by bandits three months ago.
While condemning the death of one of the school kids, who died in the hands of the captors, UNICEF said an estimated 200 schoolchildren were still being held by bandits in the country as of 29th August, urging relevant authorities to rise up and address the ugly trend.
UNICEF representative in Nigeria, Peter Hawkins, stated this in a statement by its Communication Specialist in Nigeria, Samuel Kaalu, on Saturday.
