170 Nigerian children under 5 die every day due to insurgency – UN

324,000 Nigerian school-aged children under 5 have died due to insurgency

The figure is equivalent to 90% of 350,000 that has occurred in the 12-year-old insurgency in the Northeast, Nigeria between 2009 and 2020

The UN Agency estimated that the number could rise to 240 daily (1.1 million deaths) by 2030 if the conflicts continue to grow increasingly

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) said that 170 Nigerian children under 5 die to insurgency every day in the northeastern part of Nigeria as the conflicts continue – the burden of the insurgency is borne more by infants and school-aged children.

By these statistics, the Development Agency of the United Nations has estimated that the number could rise to 240 daily by 2030 if the conflicts continue to grow increasingly, according to a media report

The UN Development Programme (UNDP) further revealed that about 324,000 school-aged children younger than 5 had died, mostly from disease and hunger, due to the insurgency in the three most troubled northeastern states of Nigeria – Borno, Adamawa and Yobe, and warned that the total figure could rise to 1.1 million if the crisis continues till 2030.

UNDP stressed that indirect deaths of school-aged children from the devastating insurgency including disease and hunger resulting from the conflict’s physical and economic destruction, already far outnumber those from direct causes, like killings.

According to a report of the study titled: ‘‘Assessing the impact of conflict on development in northeast Nigeria,’’ the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) disclosed that the figure is equivalent to 90% of 350,000 that has occurred within the 12-year-old insurgency in the Northeast, Nigeria between 2009 and 2020.

The study also says that critical aspects of progress and development, including Gross Domestic Product (GDP), poverty, malnutrition, infant mortality, education, water availability and sanitation, may not return to pre-conflict levels even by 2030.

The terrorism which was initiated by Boko Haram militants in 2009 against the Federal Government of Nigeria, has killed more than 35,000 people and displaced over two million from their homes after spreading to neighbouring countries. The conflict has been worsened by the emergence of other insurgent groups and bandits, some parading as ‘unknown gunmen’.
