A first effective home-used COVID-19 drug pill reduces hospitalization and death by 50%
A first effective home-used experimental COVID-19 drug reduced hospitalization and death for people who are recently infected and sick with coronavirus by 50%, according to drug-maker Merck & Co, in a potential leap forward in the global measure to COVID-19 pandemic prevention and control for healthy living in Public Health care Education Campaign.
The Pharmaceutical Company Merck & Co. said its antiviral drug, Molnupiravir, a whole new, effective home-use pill weapon to an arsenal that already includes the vaccine, can treat COVID-19 infection and as such, it would soon ask health officials in the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and around the world to authorize the pill’s use, once certified okay, according to a news media.
Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious disease expert at Vanderbilt University, though not in the research, said that Molnupiravir would allow the effective treatment of many more people much more quickly and much less expensively.
Merck and its partner Ridgeback Biotherapeutics said early results showed patients who received four pills of the drug, Molnupiravir, twice a day within five days of COVID-19 symptoms had about half the rate of hospitalization and death as those who received a dummy pill.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, the government’s foremost authority on infectious diseases, called the results from Merck “very good news.” Health experts, including Fauci, have long called for a convenient pill that patients could take when COVID-19 symptoms first appear, and here is one – Molnupiravir.

The U.S. FDA has approved one Remdesivir – an antiviral drug, for COVID-19 that has shown to reduce hospitalization and death by roughly 70% when given to high-risk patients.
The health-administrative body has also allowed emergency use of three antibody therapies that help the immune system fight the virus, but all the drugs are expensive and have to be given by intravenous (IV ) or injection at hospitals or clinics, and supplies have been stretched by the latest surge of the delta variant.
Like other antivirals, Merck’s antiviral COVID-19 pill works by interfering with the virus’s ability to copy its genetic code and reproduce itself.
The U.S. government has committed to purchasing enough pills to treat 1.7 million people already, assuming the FDA authorizes the drug. Merck said it can produce pills for 10 million patients by the end of the year and has contracts with governments worldwide even though the company has not announced prices.
