A STATEMENT CREDITED TO PRESIDENT BUHARI CITING EDUCATION AS A PANACEA TO POVERTY ERADICATION AS POLITICAL

UNIVERSITY DON SAYS NIGERIANS WILL NOT DEVELOP WITHOUT QUALITY EDUCATION

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared that President Muhammadu Buhari shows his hatred for the education sector by continuously reducing budgetary allocation for the sector, which makes it impossible for Nigerian universities which are short-staffed to employ more staff.

Professor Deji Omole, the Chairman of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Ibadan (UI) Chapter, made this assertion while he was speaking to the press in Ibadan on Sunday.

He said that a statement credited to President Buhari citing education as a panacea to poverty eradication as political, emphasising that using education to eradicate poverty has been proven by most transformed countries irrespective of the nature of the statement credited to President Buhari about education.

ASUU UI Chairman maintained that education policies of President Buhari have shown hatred to fund and offer quality education to Nigerians.

Professor Omole  said that words are yet to be matched with actions with respect to the promise made by the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, to declare state of emergency in the Nigeria’s  education sector, deducing  that Nigerians will not develop without qualitative education.

He lamented that the Federal Government further reduced the budgetary allocation to education sector,  an obvious deviation from its promise to declaring state of emergency in the sector.

He urged Nigerians not to expect any radical change in education sector in President Buhari’s second tenure from the state in the first tenure.

Professor Deji Omole, the ASUU UI Chairman said that reducing the budgetary allocation to education is a demonstration of hatred to the sector.

“The administration has demonstrated its hatred for education by constantly reducing the budgetary allocation to education. Most of their policies are anti-university’’, he insisted.
