Tony Blair seeks global education fight against extremism
Tony Blair, the former British Prime Minister, said there should be an international agreement to put teaching against extremism into education systems around the world.
Speaking at the Global Education and Skills Forum in Dubai this week, Mr Tony Blair analysed how education should respond to the extremist’s attacks on mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand last month which left 50 people dead.
Mr Blair suggested the use of Kyoto, Japan Protocol style, where countries committed to an international agreement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, to tackle extremism.
He wants governments of independent nations to be held accountable for the ‘’pollution‘’ should they allow the youths to be educated in a “closed-minded view of the world”.
Mr Tony Blair stated in the international education conference organised by Varkey Foundation that problems of extremism had to be looked into from an international perspective, rather than through the effort of individual countries.
US has so far spent at least two trillion, eight hundred billion dollars on counter-terrorism efforts since the 9/11 attacks on the US soil in 2001. This statistics was given by US-based think tank, the Stimson Centre
Mr Blair identified design and implementation of educational programmes as key to prevent violent extremism. According to the Centre of Strategic and International Studies based in US, programmes through education make up only 0.1 percent of global expenditure on counter-terrorism
He further called on educational institutions to teach youths about critical thinking to equip them with the necessary knowledge and skills to challenge damages to life. Part of the critical thinking is openness to other.
He made the suggestion that creating awareness to children of the way the world should work will be an added advantage to tackling the evil menace.
