A Life-Saving Breakthrough: Scientists Uncover Japanese  Juice Sarunashi, Actinidia arguta (Hardy Kiwi) – An Exotic Fruit Juice That May Help Prevent Lung Cancer

Exotic fruit juice that may help prevent lung cancer has been uncovered in Japan by scientists in a life-saving breakthrough, in our latest cancer news of today’s Eduonwheels’ Medical News post of Tuesday, 14 February 2023.

Using a mouse model, researchers from Okayama University led by Dr. Sakae Arimoto-Kobayashi, Associate Professor in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Okayama University, have shown that Sarunashi, Actinidia arguta (hardy kiwi) juice and its constituting component isoquercetin (isoQ) help prevent and reduce lung cancer, according to the Cancer News blog report.

How the Researchers from Okayama University Discovered Actinidia arguta (Sarunashi) Juice as Lung Cancer Inhibitor

Using a mouse model, researchers from Okayama University led by Dr. Sakae Arimoto-Kobayashi, Associate Professor in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Okayama University, have shown that Sarunashi juice and its constituting component isoquercetin (isoQ) help prevent and reduce lung cancer. The researchers identified the components of A. arguta responsible for the anti-mutagenic effects as water-soluble and heat-sensitive phenolic compounds.

In order to identify the possible mechanisms underlying the anti-tumorigenic effects of A. arguta, Dr. Arimoto-Kobayashi and his team investigated the chemo-preventive effects of A. arguta juice and its constituting component isoQ on 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK)-induced lung tumorigenesis in A/J mice and found encouraging results as the Actinidia arguta (sarunashi) juice reduced tumor nodules in carcinogen-exposed mice, according to the cancer news report.

About the “Sarunashi” (Actinidia arguta)

“Sarunashi” (Actinidia arguta) is an edible fruit cultivated in Japan’s Okayama Prefecture. A. arguta is one of the richest sources of polyphenols and vitamin C.

The exotic fruit, Actinidia arguta, also known as the hardy kiwi, is a perennial vine that originates from Japan, Korea, Northern China, and the Russian Far East. It produces a small, smooth-skinned kiwifruit, unlike most other species within the genus, which have a hair-like fiber on the exterior.
